Interview: Sophie Monroe

Author Interview

Meet Sophie Monroe, author of the Amazon and USA Today best selling Battlescars Series.

What made you want to be an author?

I’ve always loved to write, but never really thought of it as a “career” since publishing is such a
cutthroat industry. One day about a year ago, I had this idea for a story and decided to put it on
paper. I sent it to my best friend, who happens to be an avid reader. She loved it and told me to
look into getting it out there for others to read. It was then that I discovered the world of selfpublishing.

Who has inspired you the most?

I think it’s more of a what, than a who… I’m extremely inspired by music! I cannot write without
my headphones on and the music going. I pretty much have music on every minute I’m awake.
It’s cathartic. There’s a line in a song that I really like by The Heroes Lie called “Ring Around the Halo” and it says, “Believe in rock & roll because I swear it saved my soul.” I find that line
especially true for me. I’m a rocker girl. Some of my current favorites are: Lansdowne, Age of
Days (formally Daze), The Heroes Lie, Sick Puppies, and always Hinder and The Gaslight
Anthem.

Can you tell us about some of your earlier days of writing?

I used to write a lot in school and always had a knack for coming up with creative ideas, but I
stopped after college because of “grown up stuff.” When I released Second Chance Romance it was a disaster, there was formatting problems and editing issues, etc. I got eaten alive and
almost gave up because of it. Luckily for me, I have really great family and friends that pushed
me to keep going.

How has your life considerably changed since you've been published?

Not too much. I’m still the same quirky, fun-loving, smartass that I was before. I do love that I
have fans that I get to interact with. I love hearing what people are reading, listening to, watching, etc. I love hearing that something that I wrote is an escape for someone, or helped them through something. It’s beyond humbling.

Your series Battlescars is already an Amazon and USA Today best selling series. How
does that make you feel?

MIND-BLOWN! Seriously, I never in a millions years could have expected that to happen. It was about a week after Afflicted was out and a fan posted the USA TODAY link on my page and when I saw it I was blown away! I had no idea, so it was a shock but really awesome at the same time.

What can readers expect from Conflicted?

I think everyone is going to really enjoy Conflicted. I wrote it a little different from the first two.
Derek is such a fun and complex character. He’s kind of an asshole, but you can’t help but love
him. He has a really damaged past and trust issues because of it. The feedback for what’s
completed so far is awesome. I can’t wait to get it to you guys!

What has been the best experience so far on your journey as an author?

I think just hearing from the fans and getting to interact with them! I personally respond to every
single post, comment, email, etc. I think it’s important to be available and accessible to them.
They’re the ones that give me the ability to do what I love!

Can you give us some insight on any upcoming projects?

Once Conflicted is done I have a couple other projects in the works. I’m not sure which one I’m
going to put out first yet… There’s a new band being introduced into Conflicted called Guilty
Tendencies, so they’ll definitely get their own books down the road. I’m dabbling into a possible Granny Jean novella and I have a couple other stories ready to go… so we’ll just have to see.
(winks)

What advice can you give to any upcoming authors?

It’s a hard industry to break into! It’s not just hit the publish button and watch the dollar signs.
People can be critical and cruel, so you need to be prepared. No matter how seasoned you are, the first one star review on your “masterpiece” is going to sting. There are also no guarantees, you never know if a book is going to skyrocket or completely flop. I’m not saying don’t pursue it, just be prepared that it’s a lot harder than you imagine.

Interview: Katherine Rhodes

Author Interview of the Week

Meet Katherine Rhodes, author of the newly released book Consensual!

What made you want to be an author?

I'm not quite sure. I've been writing since I was very young... seven. I had stories in my head even then, and I remember my first short story was called "Telephone Terror." I think I still have it somewhere-- it was awesome for seven year old! I remember coming up with new ideas, and thinking how cool it would be if I could write a stories. I blame my 3rd grade and 4th grade teachers, honestly. The two of them had writing assignment after writing assignment for us, and there were many days when I just ignored all the other homework to work on those stories. Much to the detriment of my math skills.

Who has inspired you the most?

As an author, I think Stephen King. Even though I want to beat the man with a tire iron for his endings, he can weave a tale. More than that though, it's his perseverance when he was starting out that inspires me. I spent many many years chasing traditional publishers, trying to get one of them to notice me and if it wasn't for the fact that I knew he had 130+ rejection letters himself, I would have kept writing and forgotten all about getting the work out there. His book, "On Writing" is one of my favorites.
I also interviewed
Mary Higgins Clark in a previous incarnation as a reporter. That was cool, and she was also very much -- "keep plugging away, that's all you can do."

Can you tell us about some of your earlier days of writing?

HA! Well, along with the previously mentioned "Telephone Terror" wherein I discovered I am no damn good at suspense, I was a huge Star Wars fan. I mean I ate, breathed and slept it. So, naturally, that's where I started. Star Wars Fan Fiction. I still have it, too, and I plan on changing it up a bit and working it into my own epic space opera. And that was when I was 10, 11 years old. By the time I was 12, I had written a story that was sort of a spin off Star Wars and-- I don't know where I got the guts to do this-- handed it to an English teacher to read. She loved it.
In high school, no one could stop my writing. I had fans in my class, and I would let them read the handwritten originals. Yikes. (The IBM 286 was a family Christmas gift the next year and I never looked back once I learned how to type.) I was writing mostly scifi and paranormal and those are still my loves. All of my teachers were so encouraging, and there was never a doubt that I was going to college to be Lit Major.

How has your life considerably changed since you've been published?

It hasn't, not really. I do love calling myself "published author" now, but I still get up in the morning and put my pants on one leg at a time, and stumble blindly to my full time job wondering if the coffee is going to suck this morning.

What made you want to write erotica?

Ah, yes. I make no bones about this: 50 Shades of Grey. It was terribly written, didn't really show a healthy relationship, and why, for the love of cheese, does the guy always have to be the dominant? I started reading better erotica, but still why was the guy always the Dom? I write very strong females who can hold their own and it was irking me to no end that the girl was always submissive.
I used the basic frame work of FSoG, but I put in my own characters, with their own problems and what I hope is a realistic relationship. And my girl is the Domme.
I didn't set out to write erotica or erotic romance. I always used to use the 'soap opera fade to black' technique. Every time I tried to write a sex scene, it came out like "Peterotica" on Family Guy. When I wrote the first serious scene in "Consensual", I blew my own mind. I had to have someone else read it. I couldn't believe I had just written that! Most of my writing is distinctly NOT erotica; I was so worried about some kid hunting down another one of my NA or YA novels that I started writing the erotica under a different name-- this one!
Since your books get personal, let's do the same! Do you ever incorporate your personal experiences into your character's stories?

Always. "Write what you know" is a good writer's motto. Now how the heck does that work when I hadn't personally had that experience? Well, how would I act or react in the situation. And of course I pull on my own history to bring in a sense of realism. Like, I know long it takes to walk from Times Square to Carnagie Deli. I've done that walk.
And as for the other angle on that-- well. I do my own photography for my covers. From things that I have laying around the bedroom. I wouldn't own it if I didn't know how to use it. *wink*

What has been the best experience so far on your journey as an author?

Oh, it's people reacting exactly the way I hoped they would to an action or a character. "OMG, I hate X!" or "I did not see that coming!" People are always very surprised when I tell them I've published books, and then they come back and are delighted to have read the story and like to talk about it with me. It's fun to finally have people believing me when I say I'm a writer.

Can you give us some insight on any upcoming projects?

Well, Club Imperial currently has 10 planned novels, with a crossover to a new series called Silver Soul. The second Club Imperial, "Broken Bonds" -- the conclusion of Emmy and Nathaniel's story -- is due out on October 1st, if the gods smile on me. I've already started writing #3, "Knots" and #4 "The Fine Line".
I also have a paranormal erotic romance series I'm working on, involving witches and fae. So far, so good. But that's taking the back seat to some of my other projects.

What advice can you give to any upcoming authors?

Just what I've been told all along: Write what you know. Keep writing. Make your characters yours. Keep reading: writers don't live in a vacuum. And for the love of little green apples: don't edit your own work!

Thanks so much, Katherine for interviewing with us! Don't forget to follow Katherine on one of her outlets listed below!

A past she is desperate to forget.

One night, Lacey realized she might be able to run from her past with the help of Becca and one steamy Caine Rogers.

Lacey didn't know, until it was too late, how feelings, honesty, heartbreak and life altering events can change a person. Lacey has Becca’s support but will that be enough?

Will Lacey sacrifice her own happiness to do what is expected?

***WARNING***

This novel contains explicit language, sexual situations and abuse that some might find offensive.

Bio:

Author L.U. Ann recently moved to Colorado from the Eastern Shore of Maryland with her husband and two children. Life in Colorado is so much different. In Maryland, you would find her in the garden tending to her vegetables and flowers, sea glass and shark tooth hunting once a week, and enjoying the kids swimming in the backyard. Her life took a drastic change when her family moved to their own “Little House on the Prairie" at an elevation of over 6,000 feet above sea level, and a semi-arid climate that makes it hard to grow anything. While barely anything can grow where she resides now, the wildlife makes up for it. Mountain Lions, and coyotes, and rattlesnakes, oh my!
She tries to spend a little time each day writing, but domestic chores around the house usually take precedence. She would much rather hide them from her husband. She tends to her loving four-legged children who at times become much too demanding when she locks herself in the office. This often results in MORE domestic work, and she finds herself cleaning up after their deviant behavior.

At night, you’ll find her begging the kids to go to bed so that she can catch up on the latest book before her sister can. Yes, she is an avid reader who escapes her chaotic but wonderful home to the feisty depths of romance land in search of her newest book boyfriend. Shh, don’t tell her husband!

She is an artist by the grace of God. She worked as a set designer for six years, helping establish a local children's theatre where she was the scenery artist, set, and prop designer. Before that, you would find her covered in paint, so engrossed in painting a mural that time didn't exist. Graphic design is her guilty pleasure.

Destructive Silence is her debut novel. It is one of three books in The Destructive Series. Each book will hit its reader with lots of angst hoping for a happily ever after.

Dream Cast:

Melissa Benoist as Lacey Edwards

Lea Michele as Becca Fox

Casting Call!

Derek
Jack

Lily

Review:

What an absolutely amazing book. It only took me two days to read the entire book. I have never ever connected with a specific character the way I connected with Lily. She is literally the girl I was when I met my current boyfriend. Clearly there are some differences but he and I went through the same struggles in the beginning that Lily finds herself facing towards the end of her and Derek's relationship. I never met a Jack but I whole heartedly fell in love with his character and the way he fit into Lily's life.

This book is pure, raw emotion mixed with all-to-real relationship trials. This book punches you in the face with how sexy it is, too! Sarah leaves nothing out and paints the most vivid picture imaginable. Some of the language is definitely not what I was used to reading and it's very in you face, brutally blunt but without it, Forget Me Not would not be the masterpiece that it is. A truly great read!

Chance to win:

  • Signed paperback of Forget Me Not with keychain (US only)
  • $5 Gift Card to Amazon
  • 2 ebooks of Sarah Daltry Erotic Romance Collection (includes The Quiver of a Kiss novella as well as short stories “Into the Woods,” “Touch of Venus,” and “Her Brother’s Best Friend” – the short story about Derek and Lily’s first time)
